Wisdom teeth are the third molars located at the very back of your mouth. Unlike other permanent teeth, they often don't erupt properly due to the imbalance with jaw size, frequently growing sideways or at an angle rather than emerging straight.
When wisdom teeth emerge partially covered by gum tissue, these areas can become breeding grounds for bacteria. Since toothbrushes cannot reach these areas sufficiently, the gums may become inflamed and painful. We recommend tooth extraction if these symptoms recur.
Additionally, wisdom teeth growing sideways create spaces where food debris can accumulate between them and adjacent teeth. Combined with difficult access for brushing, this increases the risk of cavities and gum disease. In such cases, we also recommend tooth extraction.
Problems caused by wisdom teeth extend beyond simple pain. They can affect the overall health of your entire mouth. When they grow in unnatural directions, they may put pressure on surrounding teeth and negatively impact your dental alignment. From a long-term perspective, addressing problematic wisdom teeth is an important consideration for maintaining a healthy oral environment.
A CLINIC Advantages
Our clinic has oral surgery specialists who handle wisdom tooth extractions. With years of experience treating numerous cases, we manage even complex cases that might be unmanageable for general dental practices. Our specialists have extensive experience not only with wisdom teeth but also with more complex oral surgical procedures, ensuring a safe treatment environment.
Our expertise as specialists has been developed through performing numerous wisdom tooth extractions annually, including difficult cases with teeth embedded in bone. This wealth of experience translates into safe and efficient extraction techniques.
Wisdom tooth extraction can be one of the most stressful dental procedures, causing anxiety. Our clinic prioritizes pain management by combining two anesthetic techniques: infiltration anesthesia and nerve block anesthesia to minimize pain during the procedure. We also use topical anesthesia before injections to reduce the discomfort of the anesthetic shots themselves.
For those with particularly low pain tolerance or significant anxiety about dental treatment, we offer intravenous sedation as an option for a more relaxed treatment experience. By selecting the most appropriate anesthesia method for each individual patient, we strive to provide the most comfortable treatment experience possible.
Our clinic has dedicated counselors and concierges who provide detailed explanations before treatment. This allows you to address any concerns or questions about tooth extraction before proceeding with treatment, helping you feel reassured and more at ease.
Additionally, our specialists thoroughly explain the treatment process and only proceed after obtaining your understanding and consent. Any concerns or questions about your treatment will be carefully addressed from multiple perspectives. This support system significantly reduces the psychological burden for our patients.
Removing wisdom teeth reduces areas difficult to reach with a toothbrush, improving overall oral hygiene. This not only makes brushing easier but also contributes to long-term oral health maintenance.
Resolving recurring gum inflammation and pain caused by wisdom teeth is another significant benefit. Particularly when teeth are growing sideways or partially embedded in the gums, daily discomfort is common. Extraction can improve these symptoms and restore comfort to your daily life.
Extracting wisdom teeth at the appropriate time can prevent future oral health complications. If left untreated, they may put pressure on adjacent teeth and affect dental alignment. Poor cleaning access also increases the risk of cavities and gum disease.
In the long run, early extraction of problematic wisdom teeth can reduce the risk of needing more extensive treatment later. Improving your oral environment is an important factor not only for oral health but also for maintaining overall physical wellbeing.
Wisdom tooth extraction may require surgical procedures such as gum incision or bone removal. As a result, facial swelling and pain may occur after surgery.
Swelling typically peaks 1-2 days after surgery and subsides within about a week. Pain follows a similar pattern, peaking after 1-2 days and gradually diminishing. These symptoms are temporary and can usually be well-controlled with prescribed pain medication.
A certain recovery period is necessary after tooth extraction. While most patients can return to normal daily activities within about a week, recovery may take up to two weeks depending on the condition of the wisdom teeth.
During this period, certain restrictions apply, such as avoiding vigorous rinsing and hard foods. Most patients with desk jobs can return to work the following day, but we recommend avoiding intense exercise and heavy physical labor for several days.
We begin with a thorough examination to assess the condition of your wisdom teeth. X-rays and CT scans help us determine the position and condition of the teeth, allowing us to develop an optimal treatment plan. Our counselors and concierges will then explain the treatment process and associated costs.
Our specialists will provide detailed information and address any concerns or questions before getting your consent for treatment. Thoroughly understanding the process at this stage helps patients feel at ease during treatment. In some cases, tooth extraction may be possible on the same day.
On the day of extraction, we first administer anesthesia to prevent pain. After applying topical anesthesia to numb the gum surface, we administer local anesthesia via injection. We combine infiltration anesthesia around the tooth and nerve block anesthesia to ensure the surrounding area is completely numb.
Once the anesthesia takes effect, we perform the tooth extraction according to the condition of your wisdom teeth. For normally erupted teeth or those that have partially emerged, the procedure typically takes about 10 minutes. Cases involving sideways growth or bone impaction may take 20-40 minutes, but you won't feel pain due to the anesthesia.
Immediately after extraction, you'll bite down on gauze to control bleeding. After returning home, it's important to avoid vigorous rinsing and chewing on the side where the tooth extraction was performed. We also recommend avoiding hard or spicy foods.
For post-operative swelling and pain, take prescribed medications as directed. Swelling typically peaks after 1-2 days and gradually subsides. We ask that you return the following day for disinfection and again after one week for suture removal. Additional visits may be necessary depending on your recovery progress.
Our clinic provides personalized wisdom tooth treatment tailored to each patient's specific condition. If you have any concerns or questions about extraction, please feel free to consult with us.
